Located beneath the castle of Koroni is the favorite nesting site for the sea turtle Caretta caretta. On this particular stretch of coast about 45 nests are observed every year. In the spring sea turtles arrive in Greek waters where they mate at sea. The females then lay their eggs on the beaches from late May, with hatchlings emerging in early September.
